i am running windows 8, 64bit and sound is Realtek high definition audio

No Perry i dont have any problems joining and my pings are the same as always

here is something that may or may not help.

Open Windows Messenger, click on Tools, then audio video setup. Then just go through the steps there for setting up a mic. It has helped me in the past, hope it works for you. Very Happy
