BTW - I was just wondering how much people pay per month for these connections?
Might be tricky to work out if they are bundled with TV/Satellite/telephone deals too!

I will get LAG for several reasons.
I have 1 Server and 5 PC's on my connection. My PC's are all Wireless so are running at best 108MB/sec - but in reality it is more like 36MB. My ADSL is at 8MB/Sec - so this is the 'slowest part' of my connection. Not true!! If the boys are doing their YouTube stuff, my wireless can drop down to less that 1MB/sec which is a huge drop.
If you have any tracking cookies or Malware on your machines, this will also eat up your bandwidth, especially if you have a browser window open at the same time. Your Anti-Virus may have a firewall in it which if there are open holes, this will have a detrimental effect on the way that the packets are passed through to the 'Service Layer' (LSP) which would affect the ping time also.
Your machine/internal network has as much to do with the ping time as the ISP/Telco network and location of the final IP address. For an idea of what is happening, you can use the DOS command windows (Start / Run / cmd ). Type the following in,
tracert

and you can then actually see the routing that is occuring and where your request is going, to get to it's final destination!! If there is a routing problem at any of these locations, your ping time will also increase. Not quite as simple as first thought. I have seen people with slow (read 512k) ADSL connections but fantastic download speeds. This is because they were on a 20:1 contention ratio rather than the standard 50:1 ratio. This means that they were sharing their connection FROM the exchange with 19 other people. So that is ADSL in a VERY basic nutshell.
CABLE on the other hand has it's own problems with latency and lag. Yes you can get potentially Gibabit speeds, depending upon your provider but on the whole, most are sub 100MB and are at best 10MB/sec. The Cable system works on Rings and not point to point. You will get slower speeds at peak times, as you could be sharing your connection with over 500 other people using the same "MultiPlexer" based at the end of the street. So when everyone is watching a different TV Channel, this will cause delays in the multiplexer at the end of the road. Add the Broadband connections and even though you have been told that you are getting 100MB/sec, this could be shared with 500 people so your REAL speed could only be 0.2MB/sec if everyone else was downloading stuff at the same time!!! However, you will not be told how many people you are sharing your ring with. However, in reality, this congestion does not happen very often, but it does happen.
So the conclusion is that your Ping time is not only down to the ISP, but your local network, physical limitations in the routing tables of the routers on the Net, quality of the Telco Lines and the specifications, speed & configuration of the final server!!
Cheers
Tim

I think this is the only one truly right, because the server is in London. The ones I did first were to Groningen. I still reckon that my lag comes from the big difference between me and the other players.

Ive got a 4Mbit down and 1 Mbit up account but I never get near the 4Mbit.
Now I know its a theoretical speed but the difference is too big I think
